Description of Palpimanus gibbulus (Spider hunting spider)

Physical Characteristics

Female to 6 mm.
Abdomen orange to dark red without markings and covered with tiny light hairs.
Carapace dark reddish brown to almost black with tiny light hairs.
Legs red to dark reddish brown with tiny light hairs. Pair of legs I darker and greatly enlarged. Metatarsi of all legs rather short, about as long as the tarsi.
Palps red to dark reddish brown with tiny light hairs.

Male to 5 mm.
Markings and colours almost identical to the female.

Habitat

Dry, warm areas with low vegetation and in pine forests on low plants.

Distribution

Occurs in the Mediterranean area and Portugal.

Period

The portrayed specimen has been found in June. No further information about the period is known.
